Sierra Student Coalition
The Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is a network of high school and college students from across the country working to protect the environment. The SSC is the youth-run (age 14-30) branch of the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. Our mission is to develop leaders for the environmental movement by training, empowering, and organizing youth to run effective campaigns that result in tangible environmental victories.
In the Northwest, the SSC’s headquarters are located in Portland, Oregon where our Regional Organizer, Jenny Bedell-Stiles, works with young people at 10+ schools across Oregon and Washington at any one time. Contact Jenny to find out how you can get involved with the Sierra Student Coalition!
Unlike most national organizations, the SSC is youth-run (meet the Executive Committee). Youth not only set our national campaign priorities, they develop new resources, design and run our trainings programs, and support the SSC’s volunteer network. A small staff supports the SSC’s programs and volunteers. Meet the SSC staff.
The SSC develops environmental leaders through our award-winning grassroots trainings programs. The SSC’s training program (SPROG) is one of the most comprehensive grassroots organizing and leadership skills training programs for high school and college students. Each summer offer week-long, in-person trainings.
