Take Action to Protect Oregon's Ancient Forests and Clean Water!

Protections for Oregon's old growth forests are being stripped away by the Bush administration during its last 18 months in office. On 2.6 million acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in western Oregon, currently protected old growth forests and salmon bearing streams and creeks are targeted for new clearcutting and logging roads. Its time to raise your voice for Oregon's last ancient forests. Find out more at our BLM forests web page.

Santa Claus Delivers Sleigh Full of Coal to PGE

Utility has been naughty for polluting at Boardman coal plant-- Oregon’s Largest Contributor to Global Warming

Portland, OR-- Santa has been checking his list to find out who's been naughty or nice and he found that Portland General Electric’s Boardman coal-fired power plant is the single largest stationary source of global warming and air pollution in Oregon. PGE has been unwilling to make the investments necessary to modernize the Boardman facility with the best available pollution controls to protect public health and the environment.

Santa joined the Sierra Club to deliver a sleigh full of coal to PGE for their use of outdated, dirty technology that endangers human health and contributes to global warming. Oregonians for a clean energy future signed and delivered a giant holiday card asking PGE’s CEO Peggy Fowler to support clean energy this Christmas season by cleaning up the Boardman plant.

Twelve volunteers joined the Sierra Club’s Oregon team to help Santa with this special delivery. As Santa and his elves rolled through downtown Portland, volunteers handed out 80 compact fluorescent light-bulbs to pedestrians, along with “Make PGE Coal Free” action alerts. Arriving at PGE’s headquarters, volunteers sang a special coal-free version of “Jingle Bells” before Santa read his Christmas declaration and gave a company representative a giant stocking full of coal.

Three radio stations covered the event—Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), Air America (KPOJ), and KBOO Community Radio.

Special thanks to all of the volunteers for their work to make this event a jolly success. And a big thank-you to superstar volunteer Donald Fontenot for playing Santa Claus. We look forward to enlisting your help to put more pressure on PGE to clean up its act in the New Year!
