SIERRA CLUB ENDORSED CANDIDATES SWEEP IN STATE ELECTIONS

State's largest grassroots conservation organization engaged in extensive member outreach efforts to assist candidates

Portland, OR: After Oregon's Tuesday primary election, 100% of candidates endorsed by the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club swept in their respective elections. Statewide, U.S. Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley won the right to challenge U.S. Senator Gordon Smith in November, and John Kroger handily defeated Greg Macpherson for state Attorney General. In contested state legislative and local races, unanimously Sierra Club candidates edged out opponents, or took the top number of votes where runoff elections will follow. Highlights included Sam Adams for Portland Mayor, Kitty Piercy for Eugene Mayor, Oregon House candidates Jules Kopel-Bailey (HD 42); Chris Garrett (HD 38); Michael Dembrow (HD 45); Nick Kahl (HD 49); and Jackie Dingfelder (SD 23).

The Sierra Club is proud to have helped elect such outstanding, pro-environment candidates so far this year. We look forward to continuing our efforts in November and to keep the environment and Oregon's quality of life at the forefront for our elected leaders. Tuesday's results show that Oregonians agree that sound environmental policies, and candidates that support them, are what makes Oregon so special.

The Sierra Club works to influence local, state and federal policies in order to promote clean energy, air and water quality protection, and the preservation of threatened public lands. The Sierra Club focused its attention during this election on extensive member communication to make the case why these candidates were the strongest choices for the environment - mailing, emailing and talking thousands of Sierra Club members throughout the May election.

The Sierra Club's endorsement process is member driven and involves candidates filling out questionnaires on their views on key environmental policy questions, in-person candidate interviews with volunteers and staff, and research on candidate history. With roughly 24,000 members in Oregon, the Sierra Club is among the largest grassroots environmental organizations in the state, and the largest to endorse in state and local candidate elections.
