It is considered the crown jewel of America's National Wildlife Refuge System. And yet this truly undisturbed wilderness -- a last vestige of the American frontier that helped shape and define our national identity -- is today in grave danger of being destroyed by those seeking whatever oil might lie beneath its fragile tundra.

The initial report covers only 27 compounds, as measured in human blood and urine. Scientists haven't yet assessed whether the levels found are likely to be linked to health effects for most of these, but you can use the Scorecard to find out what chemical pollutants are being released in your community and who is responsible.
