KOHD News February 2, 2010

The Oregon Sierra Club supports the bill, in part because paper bags are made of more recycled content than plastic bags. If the bill passes the environmental committee, it'll go before the senate.

One of the major parties in the lawsuit is a coalition of environment groups, made up of Columbia Riverkeeper, Oregon Sierra Club, Landowners and Citizen for a Safe Community, Willapa Hills Audubon Society, and Wahkiakum Friends of the River. The coalition is asking the court to toss out the decision by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to approve the Bradwood Landing LNG terminal.

Coal-burning power plant in Boardman looking at future options

The Oregonian January 31, 2010

Oregon Sierra Club organizer Cesia Kearns said PGE should focus on a mix of renewable energy projects and energy efficiency initiatives to replace Boardman’s power production. The utility could also replace part of Boardman’s output with new natural gas plants. “It’s not going to be a silver bullet, but rather silver buckshot” that replaces Boardman, Kearns said.

Sierra Club: PGE Still Needs To Shut Down Boardman By 2014

Natural Oregon January 15, 2010

In the campaign to shut down the coal-fired power plant at Boardman, the Oregon Sierra Club isn’t ready to declare victory. “PGE is changing the rules at the eleventh hour so it can continue polluting unchecked.” says Sierra Club Regional Representative Cesia Kearns. ”We are prepared to clearly show through PGE’s own analysis that 2014 is the best time to phase out Boardman. Residents of Oregon are affected by the health impacts of burning coal at Boardman each and every day.”

When we last reported on the Beyond Coal campaign, regional coordinator Robin Everett made an interesting comment. “At some point along the way,” she said, “carbon regulations, or people’s demands, or global warming itself is going to cause that plant to have to be shut down.” Turns out she was right. Now the big question is, when?

Oregon To Go Coal-Free By 2020

Sightline Daily January 15, 2010

Not everyone thinks today’s announcement goes far enough. Friends of the Columbia Gorge and the Oregon Sierra Club are arguing that PGE’s own analysis shows that a 2014 shut-down would be more cost-effective and climate-friendly.

BREAKING: PGE to Close Dirty Boardman Coal Plant

Portland Mercury January 14, 2010

Lead coal fighter at the Oregon Sierra Club Cesia Kerns is conflicted about the announcement. “It shows that PGE is taking a step in the right direction, but shutting it down in 2014 would be even better for Oregon’s health,” says Kerns. Thanks to a rule handed down by the Department of Environmental Quality, says Kerns, the Boardman plant will have to install expensive pollution controls in 2014. The Sierra Club says they should seize the 2014 date to shut down altogether. “They have been polluting unchecked for the past three decades, they should not keep polluting for another decade,” says Kerns.

Santa Talks ‘Dirty’ About The Boardman Power Plan

Natural Oregon December 22, 2009

As Robin Everett of the Oregon Sierra Club points out “At some point along the way,” she says, “carbon regulations, or people’s demands, or global warming itself is going to cause that plant to have to be shut down.” So rather than pouring millions of dollars into a solution that doesn’t fix all of Boardman’s problems, Everett thinks the best way out is to close Boardman by 2014.
